My late friend and mentor Vasily used to tell me that "Artists are the best kinds of scientists in that we study everything." I believe that a statement like that is debatable and that it lends itself to some pretty interesting conversations. However, it is the nature of the artist beast to be curious and . . . to have to know our stuff.
One cannot design the human (or any other figure) without understanding anatomy. All of it.
Throughout the history of mankind, art has served many roles. At times, some cultures, such as Pompeii in Italy, revered the symbols of fertility, or in other words, our sexual organs. A fresco of a man with an enlarged phallus greets guests into the home as a wish for abundance in all parts of life.
And then, do not discount the passions and sense of humor of the artist himself . . . a man with much talent and plenty of desire. Like many nudes, especially naughty nudes, this work is currently on exhibit in Vasily's bathroom. I can attest that "he" is a great conversation starter and smile generator.
Even so, this is a quality marble carving with beautiful lines and attention to simplified designed details. The grey marble is lovely with subtle darker veins that give added depth to the artwork. The stone rests on a black rectangular base and thus, will not tip over.
