Winter . . . in the mountains. Magical, even if dangerous. The snow-capped mountaintops of the Swiss Alps are gorgeous, especially when side lit by a setting sun. This original painting is inspired by an aerial view of the rugged Swiss Alps.
A bright purple was painted over the whole canvas as a campitura (overall field color). It was thoroughly dry before I then took a palette knife with white to spread on some triangles, building up texture a wee bit as I went along. I then added the soft clouds moving in and out of or spilling over the pointed peaks.
The Alps
The color combination I wanted to explore was purple, blue, and orange. The cool colors were quite saturated, so I muted the oranges into a warm, almost neutral hue to use in the light areas of the clouds that sometimes appeared as cascading waterfalls over the rugged mountain tops. I hope that you enjoy this effect.
