In 2005 and 2006 Vasily came down to Texas to teach with me a stone-carving workshop in my home studio in Cedar Creek. And he received a couple of pieces of the precious rattlesnake limestone. Why precious? Because the layer of this fossil-filled rock lasts only about six-inches thick. The shell fossils look similar to the rattle on a snake, hence the name. It is a beautiful stone and the shells polish up beautifully, adding a subtle texture to the creme-colored limestone.
Here Vasily used the personality of the stone to create the idea... a Shell made up on smaller shells! Then he personified it by adding the curious face. At least, curiosity is the emotion I see in the expression. What do you see?
The base is a lovely piece of swirly patterned grey marble. This is a fun artwork for your tabletop or a tall shelf.
