For three winter months in 2014-2015, I lived in Umag, Croatia. The area in the northwest part of that country is called Istria and they speak Italian there, so I was able to communicate with my landlady and other locals. Umag is a harbour town and I loved taking walks most evenings along the sea.
I truly enjoyed my stay there and decided to paint this little colorful artwork recently out of nostalgia. I first painted the entire canvas (sides, too) with a bright orange. Once that was dry, I added my drawing in charcoal and then applied acrylic paint over the orange campitura. I wanted to try for more painterly strokes, of some texture, simplifying details, as well as to play with colors that had a lot of punch to them. And I allowed the orange to show through the blues and purples for visual interest.
I wanted to work with only a few colors to see how much variety I could get with them, but mostly I hoped to portray some of the peaceful excitement I had felt standing on the wide walkways along the sea edge and the harbour in Umago, Croazia. The painting has a mostly blue feeling.
I signed the painting on the right side edge, so it is not seen when in the supplied frame. Even if you choose to hang this painting without a frame, the signature is off to the side so that you may enjoy the image itself.
