Inspiration and the Story behind this Vertical Landscape Painting of Tuscany:
Enio is the name of a man who lived in this village called Castelvecchio in Tuscany, Italy. He has a small garden in the curve of the principle road.
Many years before this painting was created, Enio made some cuttings for me of his forsythia plants. He had allowed them to grown into tall bushes just outside of the fence protecting his labours.
I used to walk this area almost every day with my much older neighbor. And one February, the boldness of the vibrant yellow flowers made me stop to take a really good look. Forsythia is a nostalgic flower for me in that stems of the yellow blooms were often in a bouquet of flowers each Valentine's Day from my (now former) husband. I snapped a photo of this scene in 2018 or 2019.
Enio died a couple of years ago, selling this garden to help pay for his care home as his health deteriorated. He was a good man. So, now I have two reasons to attach warm memories of different kinds to the forsythia flowers that brighten the February winters.
I hope you enjoy my color explorations of the village that is constructed of mostly a gray/creme sandstone (pietra serena in Italian). Pastels swipes were placed over the acrylic painting on paper. Later, I sprayed several coats of Fixative, to protect the pastel pigments.
