What impresses me most about the stone carvings of Vasily Fedorouk is how he carves DIRECTLY into stone to create these lovely figures. Most people may not understand the many processes of creating 3-dimensional art, such as bronze sculpture. But Vasily often told me that the origins of the word "sculpt" meant "to remove material." This subtractive method of cutting off everything outside of the artist's drawing is such a challenge!
Have you noted the negative (air) spaces around this sea lady's figure? How her hair flows in the movement of the ocean waters, allowing for gorgeous shadows, as well as light to circle around her and enchant us? She rides this dolphin who playfully wraps in tail around the composition. At the base of the marble sculpture, you see more sea life and shapes.
This is a statue that entices you to walk around her to marvel at the intricate forms and the classical and beautiful nude figure of a woman with long flowing hair.
Seriously, I almost hate to post this sculpture for sale because it is one of my absolute favorites. My jaw drops to realize that Vasily did not use a 3-d model to "copy into marble." Instead, he drew directly onto the stone, verified the design by stepping back to judge the lines, and then cut away. This is the same process that I learned. And while I love the challenge of a complicated pose of the figure and allowing the light to enter the body's angles, I have never attempted anything quite this fantastic. (note to self!)
