Gemini listed as Female Empowerment Sculpture

Imagine my surprise when Austin-based Ruth Glendinning tagged me in a post on Facebook recently that featured my bronze sculpture GEMINI in a selection of "prehistoric" sculptures celebrating the real-life forms of the female body.

One in the edition ships from Norfolk, Virginia, and another from Boerne, Texas. She is number 11 in the image of iconic sculptures of the feminine form.

The original post by a group called "We Are the Seeds" was flattering, with its intent to allow women to be as we are instead of how we are taught we should be, shape-wise. But to have several friends RECOGNIZE my work out of context really moved me. Thank you!

Here is the image and here is the text. Click on the link to read all of the interesting comments. https://www.facebook.com/wearetheseeds/photos/a.2016020531962961/2362597813971896/

We Are the Seeds

19 giugno alle ore 03:48 ·

A reminder to any woman who looks at her body and finds it flawed: these are prehistoric carvings of goddesses. These represent the epitome of feminine beauty to those we seek to emulate when we go on "paleo" diets. Not a flat tummy, thigh gap, or gravity-defying breast among them.

These are bodies that are unique to their owners, and contain stories of desire, creation, hardship, and perseverance. These are bodies that are ready to hold you as you cry. These are bodies that worked every day to provide nourishment, resources and guidance to their communities while also caring for the next generation. They supported one another in their labor, holding one another's babies while they worked crafting tools, collecting water & singing songs to teach the young about the goddesses they so closely resembled.

And these carvings weren't found in just one area. They've been discovered nearly everywhere humanity has settled and thrived. Which means there was a time when womanhood, in all her power and capacity, was revered not as merely a sexual novelty or shunned as sinful temptation, but seen as a source of inspiration to create, to connect, and to find courage.

Today, our patriarchal society reveres conformity in women over all. It demands that women strive to achieve and maintain a form that resembles an untested girl. Our bodies must look perpetually untouched, unspoiled, a blank slate for a man to claim and use and write his own story upon. Instead of worshiping women as they are, we scrutinize and discard them as never good enough. And the more we strive to conform, the more we give up control of our bodies.

So have comfort, women: with each fat roll and jiggle you gain as you move forward in time, you come closer to resembling the goddess as she originally appeared in the hearts of humanity. She lives in you and longs to be seen and revered as she was before.

And you deserve to be worshiped.

Vasily Fedorouk: Birth of Beauty

Original Marble Sculpture by Vasily Fedorouk

Birth of Beauty

I find this marble carving by Vasily intriguing. This half-life size sculpture contains one of the signature poses of my mentor and friend's work, that of the figure looking up towards the heavens. The woman is flanked by two men on either side, with their backs to her, as if in protection and watchfulness. One man is bearded while the other is beardless. I presume that each one represents a different quality of human abilities, perhaps experience vs, new eyes?

I called his wife to see if she remembers any story of Vasily's inspiration, but at the moment all she can recall is that the Greek myths were the inspiration.

I found that sometimes Aphrodite is referred to as the goddess watching over sailors. Perhaps these two men represent generations of men of the sea? However, the male figures look more scholarly to me than men who use their hands and bodies to navigate potentially dangerous waters.

Do you have any thoughts on this marvelous piece of art? Please send them to me, I would love to read them.  And visit the site and contact either Dilbara, Vasily's wife, or me, if you are interested in collecting any of his available works.

USA trip: 6-week summary

If I missed you during my recent travels to the US, I apologize. I tried to see as many friends and family as I could. I would like to name a few people who really helped me during this last long trip:

Alex and Amber Babcock, John Borsheim, Jim and Stephanie Ayers, Heather Leiterman, Herb Long, Don Elliott and Chuck, and Michael Seiler, plus every other member of my immediate family, as well as my parents, and the lovely staff, judge, and art collectors at a new event for me: Sculpture at the River Market in Little Rock, Arkansas.

A lot more people helped me, but those named hosted me for days and/or helped in moving my art during shows. Here are a few highlights of this trip, including winning BEST OF SHOW, the only award given out at the Little Rock event. Pelican Lips won this prize and in the process found a home in Arkansas! Two other works were sold there.  It was humbling and thrilling how well people responded to my work, thanks!

The rest of the trip was family time, VA, then North Carolina to share time with some aunts and brothers, shared my Dad's birthday with him, shown here on a suspended bridge in South Carolina, and then a return to Florida to fly home to Italy. * Sculptors and students: Buy my uncut stone that exists in central Texas: I have a variety of rocks that I hate to part with, but it is more difficult to work in two countries and much of it I must allow other carvers to turn into lovely art.

* Oh, and the obvious: BUY art when you can; BUY when something moves you. Or just BUY art and hang it over your couch. It is the choices we make that show off our personalities and it is a joy to create your surroundings to your own liking.

Peace,

Kelly Borsheim
