In this case, it is that feeling of being alone even when one has the love and support of another, which most of us have (even if it is not from a partner). In my mind, the man represents the support structure for the woman. He may be a partner, or he may simply represent her family or friends (or possibly her God) - those who care about her. He is bigger than she is. He is strength. He holds her, protects her, and loves her. That is why he has his arms around her and he is looking directly at her. He cares. He is with her. She loves him too - as evidenced by her reaching up on tip-toes to reciprocate his embrace. He does not hold her against her will. Yet, she turns her face away and is arching her back away from him because she FEELS separate - at least in that one moment.

I am also trying to visually portray that sometimes the emotions we feel inside have more to do with WHO we are than WITH WHOM we are. The woman in this sculpture has no reason to feel alone. She has Him with her. Yet she still feels alone. These types of emotions intrigue me - the opposites that exist together.

Another Interpretation could be that sometimes when we feel alone, it is because we have pulled away from those who love and support us (instead of the other way around).

by Kelly Borsheim © 2001-2002

Gemini ~ Garden Bronze Statue with granite base limited edition sculpture by Kelly Borsheim. A 1-min gesture sketch from a live female model inspired this voluptuous figure of a standing woman. So, the slurry MUST enter and fill the hollow shapes or they would become one large form all over again when the wax is melted out, defeating the purpose. This second mold is a one-shot mold, not re-usable like the rubber and mother mold combination to create the wax version of the sculpture.

Oh, I love stuff like this! Knowing the qualities of your materials allows you to use them to solve problems during the process of making art. For example, here you see water being used to store (and cool) the wax replica of my original sculpture base (the large rocks).

Water does not mix with wax and it will not change the texture of the wax surface. Also, water is fluid . . . hhaha . . . meaning that it will move freely, filling in all the spaces around whatever shape the wax has while supporting it. And wax floats in water. All this makes for a great way to support otherwise fragile material in a constant variety of shapes, while also stabilizing its temperature. Too cold, the wax is hard to work, too warm and it will not retain the fine details and texture.

Note that the base has been reinforced with bamboo, another material, like wax, that can be burned out during the ceramic mold-making process. And it is strong and cheap. Perfect!

Later, when the oddly shaped ceramic mold needs to be supported upside down and vertical enough for the molten bronze to be poured into it and have it flow the way you designed the sprues to aid in that process, we use SAND to support the mold. Sand can also move and adapt to any form and allows the mold to be positioned even while hot. Also, if for some reason the ceramic slurry mold breaks or develops a leak, the sand can be quickly thrown over the leak and seal it.

Here you see the base has been removed from the water bath and flipped upright on the table for me to look it over and change anything I am not satisfied with. The reasoning was that something may shift during fusion and we would have to start again at making new waxes. While I preferred the other way, there is the very real danger that if I drop one of the waxes while trying to balance them into a tower, we would again have to cast new waxes.

Also, I know well the foundry process having worked with many foundries in the US and doing my own casting back when I was at the Elisabet Ney Sculpture Conservatory (student and later teacher). But living in a foreign country teaches one to listen sometimes. People function and do good work having developed their own techniques or strengths. While we can share information and learn from one another, it is sometimes a delicate balancing act to know when to insist on your way or to defer to theirs. As I mentioned elsewhere before, I sometimes confer with the foundry before creating a design. If I make something they cannot reproduce, I lose. February 11, 2018), to ask about the details on the red-tailed hawk that I could not find in my research. Here is a portion of that passage:

"I know what you want," said the sea witch; "it is very stupid of you, but you shall have your way, and it will bring you to sorrow, my pretty princess. You want to get rid of your fish's tail, and to have two supports instead of it, like human beings on earth, so that the young prince may fall in love with you, and that you may have an immortal soul." And then the witch laughed so loud and disgustingly, that the toad and the snakes fell to the ground, and lay there wriggling about.

"You are but just in time," said the witch; "for after sunrise to-morrow I should not be able to help you till the end of another year. I will prepare a draught for you, with which you must swim to land tomorrow before sunrise, and sit down on the shore and drink it. Your tail will then disappear, and shrink up into what mankind calls legs, and you will feel great pain, as if a sword were passing through you. But all who see you will say that you are the prettiest little human being they ever saw. You will still have the same floating gracefulness of movement, and no dancer will ever tread so lightly; but at every step you take it will feel as if you were treading upon sharp knives, and that the blood must flow. If you will bear all this, I will help you."

"Yes, I will," said the little princess in a trembling voice, as she thought of the prince and the immortal soul.

In payment for such a potion, the Sea Witch demands the lovely voice of the little mermaid and cuts out her tongue. No one said that fairy tales were not gruesome!

Despite this, the story is charming and thought-provoking. It is told from the perspective of childlike innocence that is full of the joy and wonder of first experiences. The descriptions are colorful and lively. Reading it is like seeing the world in which we live in a fresh, new way. It is a story of a pure, yet unrequited love, and a search for something larger than each of us - an immortal soul.

The story has darkness and light and is one of the influences in my observing co-existing opposites. In the end, the little mermaid does not win the soul-sharing love of her prince, but for her unwavering effort and her pure love (for she could not kill him and his new bride even to save her own life), she is given a second chance. The story ends on a note of hope, with the message that we can walk the path of our choice and obtain our goals with the assistance of those around us. It also contains a subtle warning to all of us that by our actions, we can choose to aid or to harm another.

May Sirenetta ~ The Little Mermaid enchant you with her beauty and inspire you by her good heart and pure determination.

For your bronze, you may choose between a green, a "tan," or a traditional patina [color finish in the metal]. John and I were on our way from Florida back to Texas when our car lost its engine about 1 hour east of Houston. We were fortunate enough to be picked up by a kind couple in a van and given a lift to Houston, where we rented a U-Haul truck and trailer. It was the middle of Memorial Day weekend and the idea of being stuck away from home and waiting for a mechanic to return from holiday was not a pleasant thought. So we towed our vehicle home and returned the rented wheels after the holiday.

Determining the problem and fixing the car took time. When my sculptor friends in Austin mentioned in Open Studio that I was "trapped" at my home studio, the model Phyll called me that evening and offered to take me into town for a sculpting session. This bas-relief was the result of 2 trips into town to hang out with my friends."

~ Kelly Borsheim

Contact The Artist About This Artwork

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0401/6318/0693/products/Shopify_Rehearsal_BronzeDancerFabricTwirl_Bas-ReliefSculpture-WallHangingArt.jpg?v=1594545507
reginald-walking-man-bronze-statue
Reginald Walking Man Bronze Statue

Reginald

Bronze , half-life size figure
Limited Edition of 20
(no artist's proof)
34" H x 12" x 13"
by Kelly Borsheim

Figurative Sculpture by Borsheim

Perhaps if life were simple, I would be drawn to complexity. inspiration:

Birds are fascinating with so many different behaviours among their populations. Murmuration was a new word for me. It describes how starling birds (usually) make these lyrical flights as a group, morphing the overall shape of the group as they fly this way and that in a musical, fluid type of motion.

Seeing these masses of dark birds moving in flight in this way brings so many questions to mind. A few are: How do they know? Do they practice as I did in the marching band for the half-time performance of a football game? Which one is the leader? What is the reason they fly around in this way? Is this a form of communication? If so, with whom?

I created this sculpture in wax, shaping each individual small bird in wax. I used a hot metal tool to melt the wax after I shaped each triangle, giving a wonderful fluid texture to the surface of the small birds.

At the beginning, I knew that I wanted to play with the idea of the smaller shapes creating the larger one, work with triangles, and that the negative spaces between the birds would remain as open air. I envisioned that once I got the two layers of birds cast into metal, I could then (hopefully) bend the flat bird into a shape that was more three-dimensional.

I had even started to design the corresponding base to it, but that has not yet been realized.

<img src="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0401/6318/0693/files/Shopify_MurmurationInWaxNotConnected150723_S011_AustinTexas-MyArt2Sell_480x480.jpg?v=1687199045" alt="the small wax birds composition, I set this work aside for other endeavors.

Finally in 2019, I decided that enough was enough. I would not be able to preserve this work in wax and it was best for me to bring it to a bronze foundry and hope that they had technicians with the skill and patience to weld the wax pieces together long enough to get the piece changed into bronze.

Thus, no mold was make of this artwork. I suppose that I could make one from the bronze, but have not done so. The foundry not only cast the piece (and did a beautiful job of it!), but they added the black square rod and granite base. I may or may not change that in the future, but for now, the idea of so many years ago has been realized. I feel grateful for this!

<a
