Diver (Marble Sculpture)

This tall thin marble sculpture vertical sculpture of a diver just as he enters the water with a small splash if carved from a Spanish marble called Rojo (red) Balboa (likely the name of the quarry). The stone is carved with maximum curvature in the athlete's body from a straight narrow block.  The colors are rich and gorgeous.
Note:  The sculpture rolled off of the lap during carving and the legs broke off.  The marble was glued back together and the carving continued.  Think of this sculpture as having been restored by a museum, because the stone is so beautiful and a diver must have legs!  See the image on this page showing a closeup of the chipped stone.

The thin stick of marble was given to me by Dilbara Arapova, the wife of my late friend and mentor, the Ukrainian-born sculptor, Vasily Fedorouk [d. August 2009].  It sat with me for a while before I came up with an idea.  I wanted to carve a figure, but the patterns would compete with any detail.

The Diver idea emerged, so to speak.  Curves, anatomy, but simplified... the way that Vasily tried to teach me to do during the carving of my Lips of Life.  It was a fond memory for me of his being at my home in central Texas co-teaching a stone carving workshop in 2006.  We watched the Luge sport during the Winter Olympics... he told me to see how the uniforms glossed over the figures, simplifying, but not obliterating.

Diver Turkish Marble Putting as much Curve in the art as possible in the stone

I tried to get as much curve into this stone as I could.

Diver Work-in-Progress Shaping Stone into Male Figure

I hope that you enjoy this piece.  Do note that I carved this shortly after I broke my wrist and had the cast removed.  I must confess this:  I was sitting down working on my lap [my wrist broke because of my knee giving out, after two unhealed injuries in 2016].  At one point, my beloved landlord's dog, Gregory da Pisa, jumped up on my leg to see what I was doing, and the sculpture rolled off of my lap onto the ground.  The legs snapped off.  I was devastated!  However, I decided to glue it together and keep working.  I would like this piece to find an adoring home, but I am also happy to keep this sentimental work for myself.  Destiny will determine his fate, no?

A couple of images were taken of the final sculpture with the original base, which I left in Italy.  The new base of black granite is with the piece in Norfolk, Virginia and gives a lovely reflection to the marble.
