This is a great example of Vasily's voice in his figurative art. I love the sweetness and innocence in the poses, especially details such as her delicate hand, palm up, while the other hand contrasts the pose with fingers spread over the top of the belly. Perhaps both are maternal gestures.
Beauty probably refers to Aphrodite or Venus, a popular theme among many artists throughout the ages. The young man on the left and the older, bearded man on the right represent qualities, perhaps youth and wisdom, respectively.
Vasily often depicted people looking towards the heavens. He was very spiritual in that way, and his compositions often show his belief in the connection between god and nature.
This sculpture is intended to be viewed from only three sides. The back side is the raw shape of the marble direct from the quarry. In the detail photo showing the face of the bearded man, you may see to the right (ie, the back edge of the sculpture) the circular drill marks to split the stone.
Please visit the site and contact either Dilbara, Vasily’s wife [via his Web site], or me, if you are interested in collecting any of his available works.
