Pastels in Paradise - Art Workshop in Hawai'i with Kelly Borsheim

Hawaiian Art Journey presents . . .

"Pastels in Paradise with Artist Kelly Borsheim"

Art Workshop Dates: 5-10 September 2010 (Americans: September 6 is the Labor Day holiday)
([PROBABLE--see below] Travel days: arrive Saturday 4 September; with a departure date on Saturday 11 September)

Enjoy a week at the Kona Village Resort on the Big Island of Hawai'i while creating colorful art with pastels. Artist Kelly Borsheim brings her oil painting, classical drawing, and sculpting training to her pastel art and she will share lots of these skills with you.

Pastels are pure pigment and without oils or solvents, pastels are the traditional medium used to create permanent art, as well as clean (Nature friendly) street art. Spend a week with a real madonnara (Italian street painter) - Kelly Borsheim.

She will guide you through some drawing and observation techniques, as well as sharing tips on making your 2-dimensional art look more sculptural. We will talk about color and design and help you develop your voice. Focus in an environment far away from your typical daily distractions and concerns. Improve your drawing skills. Students will work from live settings around gorgeous sites on the island, from photos as desired, and even from a live model during this week of exploration and creativity.

The setting is sure to inspire and the Kona Village Resort will take care of making you comfortable and keeping you well fed. Awaken your senses and get engaged. Hone your artistic voice.

Students do not need to have had prior art experience, although some drawing skills will be helpful. Even experienced artists will appreciate the time away from the rigors of their usual life and the ability to create without concerns of cooking, washing, or much else, saving you time and money.

Materials List

(updated 20 January 2010)
  • pastels (pastel pencils optional)
  • charcoal sticks (not compressed)
  • rubber eraser
  • stomps & small sponges (cosmetic sponges on a stick work well)
  • tracing paper (not for what you might think)
  • colored sharpie pen -- red or blue (other than black)
  • drawing pencils
  • sketchbook
  • Pastel papers -- prefer Wallis, Sennelier, or PastelBords
  • Carrying case for all materials + personal items (water, snacks, etc.)
  • easel
  • drawing board + clips
  • paintbrushes with short tips (clean, try to avoid used oil brushes): short bristles seem best
  • Wet-Ones or at least paper towels (clean your hands)
  • Camera, if you have one (certainly optional)
  • Two pieces of cardboard slightly larger than the size of your largest drawing paper/board.
  • Shipping tape

Details:

  • Pastels: bring what you have or buy a kit with about 30 (minimum) colors in full range. Then add singles of dark greens, red/burgundies, blues, and black. Rembrandt-brand black is the best black -- the most black of all the brands. It is great!
  • Rubber eraser -- the kneadable kind, brand _______ preferred
  • stomps & charcoal -- at least two or three of each, but if you enjoy charcoal, bring more of that.
  • Tracing paper - helpful if it is at least the size of your drawing paper or boards
  • drawing pencils - what you are most comfortable with
  • Sketchbook -- a portable size that you like (for me, I prefer to draw larger than small, so 8x10 is min., but they are heavier) - a nice bonus is the kind in which a page will rip out (can use it without the book on your drawing board)
  • Pastel drawing papers: Both Wallis and Sennelier make a sand-paper type toothed paper that is great for pastels. Tooth is the more important thing (tooth is the term to describe a rougher surface that can hold materials well). I also like Ampersand's PastelBord. Sizes = 9 x 12, 12 x 16 Check the internet and/or call Vicky Kibler of Punahele Travel who specializes in Hawaii. She is toll free at (877)320-0647 or vtravel@hawaiintel.netCheck the internet and/or call Vicky Kibler of Punahele Travel who specializes in Hawaii. She is toll free at (877)320-0647 or vtravel@hawaiintel.net-well. Bring 2-4 pieces.
  • Drawing board should be larger than the papers you bring to work on, but not so large that you cannot pack aboard a plane.
  • Easel: travel easel preferred, table easel if you have nothing else. Or contact Hawaiian Art Journey or Kelly Borsheim -- there may be one available for you in Hawai'i.
*If you are having any trouble finding supplies, please contact the instructor and she can bring what you need to buy.

*Travel tip: Kelly often either chooses a suitcase that has proper proportions for her drawing board and other large flat materials, or packs a thinner rectangular box that is strong and large enough to pack the art and boards and wraps her clothes around the art materials, using the clothes like bubble wrap. Kelly often chooses an airline based on their carry-on policy.

Optional Trip to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park

Kelly would like to visit the volcano park -- to go hiking and exploring and perhaps take photographs or draw as inspiration for more ambitious artworks. Mostly, she just wants to be in a zone of Nature that she has never seen before. So, she asked Robert Adams of HAJ how to share that experience with those who feel the same. The Volcano Park is approximately a 3-hour drive (one way) from the Kona Village Resort -- so a long day trip.

If this interests you, Robert Adams of Hawaiian Art Journey is working up a package deal. Details will be posted shortly . . .

Details have arrived! [As of 26 February 2010]
Kona Village Resort will provide a driver for an 8-person air-conditioned van. So, besides the driver and Instructor Kelly Borsheim, there are six seats available. The van and driver are available for 12 hours, with approximately 6 hours used to drive to the park and back (so 6 hours for visiting the park). The prices below include the van, driver, insurance, and extra night at the Kona Village Resort, a packed lunch, entrance to the park, and of course, our art time together.

$600 per person in a shared hale
$645 per person in a single hale (room)
*This price reflects if ALL six places in the van are filled. If we have fewer than 6, the price may be higher as the days' travel expenses will be split between those that go (not including the driver or the instructor).
**Another option available if we have a small group is to skip the van and rent a car and drive ourselves instead. In this case, expenses will be shared by all passengers.

The plan is to fly in on FRIDAY, September 3 (and enjoy the Friday night luau at the resort). Then early on Saturday morning, we take off to the Volcano Park (while other workshop participants spend Saturday arriving to Hawai'i).

EXTRA DAYS: Thus far, some HAJ workshop attendees have been so elated with their carefree environment and highly focused creation time that they have opted to stay an extra day or two. If you would like to stay extra days - before or after the workshop, please contact HAJ. Prices are as follows:
$365 per person in a shared hale
$495 per person in a single hale (room)
(Prices subject to change, contact the HAJ for the most up-to-date information.)

Extra detail from Robert: If your instructor wants additions made available to you you will be given a "promo code" to enter before paying and the cost will be added. For example, Kelly Borsheim is thinking of an additional day and night with an escorted tour to the volcano. In this example only the first 6 applying will fit in the escorted van.
[As of 26 February, there has not yet been a promo code assigned to Kelly Borsheim's Optional Trip to the Volcano Park.]

Register early as it insures the class and your place in it. Refunds are up to thirty day prior to start. (Once the class makes -- has enough students, you will be contacted with this news so that you may start to make your travel plans. Early registration helps everyone.)
  2. Who should I contact for more information?
Try visiting Hawaiian Art Journey's "Odds and Ends" page. Also you may contact Hawaiian Art Journey for questions about the program, Kona Village Resort, or travel arrangements.
If you have questions regarding the actual teaching or materials list, please contact the instructor Kelly Borsheim.
  3. Who should I speak to if I have special dietary needs or other questions about meals or lodging?
Please see the site for the Kona Village Resort and contact them about your menu requirements after you have successfully registered for the art workshop. Make sure you tell the staff that you are part of a Hawaiian Art Journey experience.
  4. Am I rooming alone?
Our normal rate and arrangements are for double occupancy. This will give you a roommate unless you bring your own. Please decide in advance as this assures space available.
  5. What shall I bring?
Check the class description for supplies needed. Order early, pack them on the plane or have FedEx carry them (No UPS or USPS to the village) Have them clearly marked with: Hawaiian Art Journey, Your name, Your instructor's name, expected arrival. Carrying your own? Check with airline and TSA. Your instructor may be able to have what you need here. Check with them. Travel and supplies are not included in the cost.
  6. Can I come early or stay after?
Yes, but such arrangements are made with the Kona Village Resort front desk. Once the class is a "go" and before travel reservations, call the front desk (808-325-5555) and inquire. The rates are not the same as for the class but are favorable.
Unless otherwise noted classes are from Sat. to Sat. Saturdays are travel days. All other days are work days. Look for, or request your teacher's syllabus and instructions.
  7. What should I bring?
    • Medication and backup prescriptions: Don't leave home without them.
    • Sunblock.............OK? (You can buy here at the resort store, 9 to 5).
    • Laundry. Here, there is the worlds most beautiful plein air laundromat (no charge, soap included)
    • Returning art: Bring packing. Items too large to take with you can be shipped back to you at additional cost by the front office.
    • Washable casual resort clothes and something to paint in (unless you are a sculptor) See the KV site for guidelines.
    • Food allergies: Please e-mail Kona Village with your name, arrival date and specific requirements. Bring your own Epinephrine pen.
    • Getting here: Travel is your responsibility. But if Kona Village Resort is advised of you arrival, date flight and time, you will met as part of the package. Should you wish to rent a car, please do so in advance and download a map. Or call the Resort at 808-325-5555. Do not count on the car rental folks to know a thing........at all.
  8. What if someone wants to buy my work?
Some of you guys are awfully good. People will be looking over your shoulder and may ask about a purchase. You should know that there are resident artists at the Village, including the two Pennies who will be teaching for us. They pay a small commission to the Village for the use of the area and access to the clientele. It is only fair that we do so also. Now we have agreed not to merchandise our work by display or posting prices, etc. However, should you sell something, you owe a 25% fee to the front office that day (so price your work accordingly). You may charge it to your card by writing a note and submitting it or leave off a check. This is commission plus GET (Hawaii's General Excise Tax). This is less than most galleries' commissions.
  9. What is included? What is additional cost?
This is an all inclusive week. We try to anticipate your needs and provide all. However, there are some things that are paid for separately. Check the Web sites or ask if you are not sure. For example, all meals are included and are great, I might add. Alcohol, either with meals or at the bar is not. Spa services and some activities are in addition to the base charge. We pay no further taxes and a gratuity is already in place for the staff. To cover anything additional you may want, you will be asked for a credit card when you sign in. A bill (if any) will be given at departure. Example: You have friends on the Big Island. You invite them to lunch or the luau. This can be charged to your card.
The base price is for double occupancy (separate beds, same gender). In all truth you will probably make an "art buddy" good for many years to come. On the other hand if you: snore, cough, and/or sleep walk you may wish to bring a spouse or compliant offspring. If you wish to upgrade at our rate, inform the front desk and sign for the charge.
